It is a nice bright green ( just a slight bluish hint ) which turns to mahogany plum in the winter in colder climates. Cryptomeria prefers to grow in full sun and in well-drained soil. It is a handsome tree and only grows prettier with age, with the most striking feature being its pyramidal shape with dense branches, spreading in concentric circles. Although it is not as well-suited to the United States as to its native Japan, it is still an excellent tree for the Southeast. The tree thrives when planted in USDA Hardiness Zones 5 through 9.
